Gospel or Christian Rap and other forms of contemporary Christian music has been on the rise. With many artist such as Kirk Franklin, Canton Jones, Edward Long, Mary Mary and others, who can help but enjoy and love them! But is there a lack of support of Gospel RAP? With artist such as Gospel Gangsta, T-bone and Cross Movement, the way has been paved, for sure. But in comparison to more traditional, r&b, praise and worship styles, is the support of rap minute?
We have many brothers and sisters that are hip hop/urban inspired artist who are using their gifts for Jesus Christ, but they often find rejection and lack of encouragement or support. We are fellow witnesses to this. Many denominations within the Body of Christ, believe that "rapping" as a form of praise or worship is almost "blasphemy". What do you think?
I do know that David was a psamlist and he often used his harp as an instrument of music, but his words is what was canonized in our bible because of its great meaning, importance and anointing(being that it was inspired of God). Jesus said that whoever desires to worship God must do it "in Spirit and Truth". The leaders, specifically, within the Body has to aggressively "try the Spirit" by the Spirit. How do we discern the Spirit of something, music in particularly. The Word of God bears witness to His Spirit. If the beat or music is saturated with the Word of God, that IS His Spirit, penetrating the ears of listeners. Regardless of the beat or music behind the lyrics, be it, heavy metal, pop, contemporary, rap, hip hop or r&b, if the Word of the Lord is in it, HE IS IN IT!
We ARE the Body of Christ! Can your body function effectively without an arm, toe, foot, finger, eye, etc.? No. Each member of the Body is essential, needed and loved of Christ. We need each other to complete the mission of Christ effectively, regardless of each others individual gifts and talents.
Rap and other styles of urban or "hood" gospel/christian music is members of the Body using their god given talents and gifts for HIS glory.
We encourage all of our brothers and sisters out there, who are continually trying to serve God with your music, to continue, for "in the beginning it may seem grievous, but in the end, you will see a peaceable fruit!" For the race is not given to the swift but to the one that endures to the end. And to my other brothers and sisters, who have not understood in the past, the significance of these forms of gospel or christian music, I pray that our Father through Jesus Christ will help you to see the importance and blessedness of these forms of music and that we become One Body through Jesus Christ!
